Well everyone has a lot of opinions on this I see...
I'll tell things from my own perspective. It's the perspective of someone who self-harms (although it's been a few months! Go me :D ), and the perspective of someone who's cared for people who self-harm.
People seem to think that people who self-harm are more likely to kill themselves. I disagree. Often, it's a way of getting the pain/anger/unhappiness/frustration out, to stop suicidal feelings building up. Perhaps suicidal people are more likely to self harm, but I don't think it's true that self-harmers are the ones most likely to attempt suicide.
I also don't think it's likely that a self-harmer could kill themselves by accident, when meaning to just cut. The worst long-term effects of self-harm are pretty unsightly scars. There's also the risk of infection, so if you DO self-harm, make a habit of keeping stocked up on tcp, melolin, micropore, bandages and safety pins. I'd rather not self-harm, but if i feel the need to, I want to make sure my cuts don't become infected. Ew.
Some people seem to think that self-harmers do it for attention. Maybe some do. For someone to crave attention so badly that they'd mutilate themselves? Whether they're consciously doing it for attention, or they're self-harming for other reasons, they deserve atttention, and like was said above, psychiatric attention.
If you self-harm, go to your doctor. You're not a loony. They won't lock you up. They'll arrange for you to talk to a specialist, and you'll probably be medicated. I'm on anti-depressants and mood stabilisers at the moment, and they seem to be doing the trick.
Also, if you've self-harmed and perhaps cut too much or too deeply, go to hospital. They won't judge you. They'll patch you up and get a CPN to speak to you. If you ask, they'll give you advice on how best to look after self-harm injuries in future.
If you need to talk to someone about it, speak to your doctor or a guidance counsellor. Hell, email me if you think It'll help.
Bottom line is, self-harmers are ordinary people. They're just ill. They need help and attention and they'll get better. There might be something that happened to them to trigger it, or it might just be bad brain chemistry, or a mixture of the two. Either way, you need to seek help. Self-harm's a very temporary solution. Don't let it be a long-term one. Two of my exes can't wear anything with short sleeves because of self-harm scars. Not to mention that it messes up the elasticity of the skin when scars form, and if you've got eczema too, i don't envy ya. :)
But yeah, talk to someone.
*hugs*

Part of my job is dealing with those that self harm, I glad to say that with 90% it's just a call for help, then you have those that think that they will get more from people if they cut up, and of course those that want to die If someone wants to kill themselves there is little anyone can do to stop it.
Those people that use for it for a cry for help must be given that help, what we should ask ourselves is why are we not listening in the first place, how many of us are two busy when a child comes up to us, and we say not now I'm busy, what's more important then life?

It is very sad that they need to hurt themselves to gain release from their emotional trauma, and it would be best to seek help. I feel sorry for anyone who feels the need to do this.
Macho, what are you on about? Its nothing to do with sex. Many self-harmers are young girls who have never had sex.

nicely i imagine it truly is somewhat a good type of young ones go by. I went by it and typically it replaced into basic to get out my pent up deprerssion and anger. (in the route of myself) it isnt a good element to do and im happy im sober from reducing yet yea its change into particularly common now between human beings that's traumatic

They need help from someone who respects them and does not think that they're a freak just because they're not perfect. They need somebody who actually cares and isn't getting a hundred bucks an hour for pretending.

well, I did myself
and some other people around me also.
It is just very hard to cope with (for yourself, to hide it etc)
I feel sorry for people who harm themselves. I don't hate them or whatever negative feelings. No! I just want to help them.
but now I am ok, I feel very very fantastic and I told myself not to do it anymore. (very hard, but I am still 'clean')

They take too long to enjoy sex for their steem is too low. Cutting especially in ladys mean they dont enjoy sex as those who dont. Their men also say that they enjoy but not as much as with those who are not cut. This has made many men divorce, depart from their wives and also many cases of violence in marriages come out from this kind of bed situation whereby a man doesnt enjoy total happiness from his companion.

They are often referred to as emo even if they aren't because it is a sterotypical thing. Despite it being mentally caused, people ahve little sympathy for self harmers. Dunno why but it's true. They should just stop, and go let their pain out in some hard excercises instead.
