Polaris and the big dipper (cons) have been a favorite. Although the brightest I think is Sirius.

The North Star (Polaris) is the star by which sailors navigated, because it's the only star in the heavens that does not move. It is stationary the year round, thereby making it perfect for navigation. You always know where you are by finding it.
No, it's not the brightest star -- the brightest star is Sirius, in Canis Major.

in the northern hemisphere, polaris, the north star doesnt turn (or appear to turn, actualy the Earth is doing the turning) as the other stars do, it always stays pretty close to north. In the southern hemisphere, they use the southern cross.
