it is never completely safe to go into labor early. the biggest problem with premies is lung developement, and until about 38 weeks they will probably have some trouble breathing. i think that 26 weeks is the earliest you can have a baby with a chance of survival, but that baby is terribly likely to have so many problems, both immediately and later on in life. unless there is something wrong, and the baby is safer on the outside than the inside, you should never try to induce labor until 39 weeks to be safe.

Even babies born at 38 or 39 weeks can have some problems. 22 or 23 weeks is about the earliest that a baby can possibly survive, but even then many die or have life-long disabilities. If a woman has preterm labor, I think that 36 weeks is about what the doctors shoot for.

It seems as if a baby born 37+ weeks is not considered preterm. Anything prior to 37 weeks would be called preterm. I found some information on the link attached regarding labor prior to the 40 weeks.

Hi
My daughter was born at 23.2 weeks, 450 grams. She's now a healthy, happy 3.5 year old. She had a lot of problems and came home after 5 months in hospital. No early labour is safe though, but the further along you are the better chances of survival.

Well at 24 weeks a baby can potentially survive. However full term is 37 weeks so anytime after that is ok. I never have made it that far always delivered super healthy babies at 35 weeks. I am pregnant w/our 3rd, and my OB thinks I am incapable of carring past 36 weeks so if I go to 36 weeks I will be induced

I went into labor at 35 weeks and my baby still had some issues. nothing too serious though. I'd say 30 weeks.
