First of all, you have four fingers and one thumb. This is very important because the advantage of having what is called an "opposable thumb" is what allowed us to evolve into the human we are today. This thumb allows us and the apes to grasp objects. Although grasping objects seems trivial it is very important because in order to manipulate tools at greater and greater precision, we need this ability. And the ability to use tools allowed us to increase our technological advantages over the many years of intellectual evolution. As far as the lengths of the other fingers, I would assume that some humans are still born today with fingers the same size, but over time, there were advantages to having fingers of various sizes and that evolutionary advantage sticks with us today. Also, you will notice that when you bend your fingers towards you, they all seem to line up perfectly, which is most important since this would logically make the best gripping position. Of course over time, man has created ways to utilize each finger in it's own unique way. Great question!! because knowing why our bodies are the way they are is like a mystery that can be solved with some logic and understanding of evolution which allows us to survive in the current environment we exist in today. An interesting question may also be that as we become less dependent on our hands, how will future humans evolve to deal with the ever shrinking size of the items we interact with each day, like cell phones and keyboards. Someday, we may be able to genetically alter our DNA to produce humans with very slim, tiny fingers to deal with this miniaturization.

God designed them that way...
amazing huh?
if you hold your hand out, and try to pick up a tiny object, coin etc.. you'll notice, the finger tips all come together as one size, ie; they meet .. its amazing to me that they work as they do.. perfectly...

to modify and to make our grabbing ablity stronger. coz if you had the same length of a index or middle finger, it will be hard to grab or to type. and to control our writing. try this: only use your 3 middle fingers to grab and write anything, it would be hard.
