new york use to be called "new amsterdam" because it was settled by the dutch, and it was named after the city of amsterdam in the netherlands. then the english renamed it "new york" after the city of york.

York is a city in England. Early colonists named many places in America after English places, and put the word "New" in front. So New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire, etc. all get their names from older English locations.
