Algae is just a lesser form of a plant and needs three things, light, water, nutrients. lol. Definatly reduce the amount of light on the tank. only turn on the tank lights when your wanting to enjoy the fish. As per clean up i would recommend talking to a petstore about your set up, how much algae you have and what kind of fish your keeping in what ever size tank you have. these will all determine the size and type of algae eater that will work for you. what ever you do, do not take the rocks out and clean them in the dishwasher as sujested. There are living bacterias that reside in your aquaruium rocks that basically break down the fish's toxic ammonia. if you clean your rocks like that they will die, and chances are your fish might also. each time rocks are cleaned in that fashion it takes the bacterias a month to re establish. good luck

algae eaters like the pleco, Chinese algae eater, and otocinclus catfish are excellent for keeping your algae under control. Your tank shouldn't be near windows, or vents, as this will stimulate the bloom. Monthly tank maintenance will help to. Siphon the algae from your rocks, use an algae scrubbing pad as well. The algae bloom starts on the glass underneath your rocks and makes its way up the walls. For this you can pull back the rocks in your tank, to where the glass underneath is exposed. Take an algae remover, i suggest a scraper, and remove the algae is well as possible. This should take care of the bulk of the bloom and the general tank maintains that i mentioned before will keep it under control.

My husband...he put our big rocks, and plants in the dishwasher...no detergent..but it worked well...I was shocked that it worked so well....lol. Sometimes I use an old toothbrush to try and scrub them clean, but the dishwasher works way better.
I don't know if it's been suggested yet..but too much sunlight causes the algae to grow faster...so block the sun from your tank and turn the light off in there regularly...give your fish as much light as normal daylight hours would be.

Get one of those fish tank scrubbers, and scrub the sides, then also a gravel cleaner if you don't already have one, to clean it. Change the water more often...20percent of the tank...some say daily.

Some algae a plecostamus won't eat...soo...that depends.

Apple snails I saw some at Wal-Mart and these guys just only feeds on algae and leftover goldfish fish food, or these fish that cleans your aquarium by taking in (similar to beach sand) solid sand and a result of frsh new ones, I dont know what they are called, they are expensive, but they can get sick by the sand not being so santitary.

There is a chemical called Alegae Destroyer Advanced you can buy from any local pet store. It is safe for all fish and will destroy all trace of alegea quickly and keep it from growing back. I have been using it in my tanks now for over 4 years and it is the best stuff I have ever used.

do you really want a chemical in you're tank ?????????

Algae is caused by too much light, do you turn off you're tank light at night?

Is you're tank getting lots of sunlight?

you can use some warm/hot water in a "fish only' bucket, and a big hard bristle brush- and you're set-
Chemicals are not good for you're fish.

They sell this stuff at Walmart. It's little pellets called something like anti-algea or something. Those worked pretty well when I couldn't have an eater. They we're under 5 bucks and came in a box of like 10 or so.
