Could be hydrogen. Very explosive!

Yes, this is bad, Hydrogen gas, Oxygen and a bit of Sulfuric acid... when was the last time these batteries where filled? Most all electric forklifts use non sealed batteries that you as the maintenance person need to top off before a charge and after it has been at rest for a while. Use distilled water and not tap water, only fill up to marks on the batteries, but better yet, seek out your operators manual.

Oh, 2 good, my side hurts from laughing so hard! Yes, the vapors from an overheated battery are BAD! Also, it sounds like you could have an electrical fire on your hands.
Did you check the water level recently?

I would change that battery if i was you , one it could be very volatile and the least spark or load they can explode spraying acid everywhere , they also give of a mist that can harm you so do not breath it , my memory eludes me at the moment i think its potassium

I had a battery that exploded, it ripped the casing to bits, wrecked my sons jeans and my shoes. We were lucky not to get burned.

I take it your not a fork lift driver other wise you would know as they tell you in training that if this happens you report it document it and get the thing changed asap! yes it is bad for you!
