Ordinarily, you can't have a non-student stay with you for any extended period of time. A weekend or so, ok. Your roommate DEFINITELY would care, as the space is confined. Be considerate of your roommate and you will be successful in the dorms.

If it's a person of the opposite sex, definitely clue in your roommate about that and honor the roommate's requests. If you have to, get a motel for the weekend.

I have been working for the housing department on my campus for over 7 years, and know that policies vary from institution to institution. Some schools have a strict guest policy, where guests are checked in and out if they do not live in the building. There are certain time limits in these situations, usually. Other institutions leave it up to the roommates to work out, but generally also cover themselves with an underenforced policy as to the number of times a guest may stay, in case a conflict arises later. The best way to find out is to ask your RA what the policy is, check your housing contract if you are required to sign one, or look in the student handbook if one is available. Regardless, make sure to also discuss with your roommate, because I have watched situations get rough very quickly when one person has a guest over more than the other roommate would care for.

yes, My roommate would have tons of friends come in from the suburbs and it was alot of fun. Normally they can't stay for an extended period of time though. I'd say anything longer than the weekend, and it would be a no. I'm sure your roommate will want to do the same thing at some point, so it shouldn't be a problem. We had guys sleepover with us all the time, so there would be five or six of us in a little dorm room for the weekend. It was tons of fun until a friend of a friend invited someone she didn't know very well and he started using illegal drugs in the bathroom in front of our suitemates. (You usually share a bathroom with two other people.) My roommate kicked the guy out, but our suitemate reported my roommate and myself as "doing drugs." If you do illegal drugs, then you not only get kicked out -- you get arrested at most colleges. I only heard about it, so I told the RA that I didn't see anything. I didn't get kicked out, but I think my roommate had to hire a lawyer to defend her against the housing committee. All because she didn't check out her guest. Most roommates are cool with visitors. But yeah, stay in a motel for $50 max if you think it is going to be an issue. I came in late once my sophomore year and tripped over a chair. I woke up my roommate, and she did not talk to me for the rest of the year. some people are really touchy. The best thing to do is invite someone to visit you on a weekend your roommate goes home or goes to visit friends at another college. Then you can drink all of her "i can't believe it's not butter!"

most of the time there are rules about that sort of thing but RAs rarely care unless they are totally lame. you can always have guests for weekends but anything over that is pushing it and is inconsiderate to your roommate. dorm rooms aren't very big so you should think about the person you are living with and if they would want some stranger hanging out for weeks and weeks. if the roommate doesn't care then go for it. just don't be dumb about it and you won't get into trouble.

depends on the dorm.
depends on the RA.
my friends and i got our RA high as a kite the first week of school, so she never said anything to us except shut the fck up when we were being too loud at night.
so get in good with the RA and anything goes.

I did it! I was the visitor. I really don't think it matters as long as they know. Yeah. It can be done I wouldn't worry. I was out of town, as well.

It depends on the college. They should provide you with a copy of the rules in the housing agreement, if not elsewhere as well.

In my experience, they never cared. I wouldn't stay for like, months or anything, though. Especially if there is a room mate.

That really depends on the school's policy. Some schools are strict about it and some arent as strict. If you included the school's name, i could tell you more about their policy.
