I'm buiding a house and am at the point where I need to choose my household appliances. there are so many choices out there does anybody have any suggestions on what to buy, or ones that I need to stay away from? Fridge, Stove, Washer/Dryer, dishwasher, and over the range microwave.

Kitchenaid, Maytag, Kenmore, General Electric are great so shop any compare. Also checkout the companies for rebates and added incentives to buy their product. I had already decided on a Maytag Fridge because of the sizes that they offered then got a single bottle wine cooler for nothing.

Are you going to install electric or gas (natural or
propane ) ? What are your budget limitations ?
Natural Gas is safe & if you are in an area where there are power shortages you can still cook & or heat your home !
I personally would go with natural gas, as electric is a pain in the rear axle, when the power is out !
You can have your hot top stove & oven in natural gas ;
microwave & other appliances in electric. Your dryer & hot water heater can also be natural gas,too !
Try to find a commercial restaurant dealer in your area & talk with them about your kitchen appliances. They can show you what they have & also give you a better idea on the life of the brands ! Lowes & Home Depot are also great help on these items, too.
Some of the brands I know of are : for stoves/ovens=
aga; wolf & viking; for dishwasher: whirlpool; for fridge:samsung ; whirlpool; subzero; washer/dryer:whirlpool ; & samsung !
Then there are also a bunch of European brands that are also really well made, for all the appliances !
Braun;Krups; etc...
I hope some of these ideas have helped you !

Gas stove, gas dryer if you can get one. Get the stove with extra insulation for keeping cooler in summer in the kitchen. Also, get extra insulation in the dishwasher for noise. My son has a compacter and it is wonderful. No central vac - they break and are hard to fix.

Build a special place for the microwave and also certain appliances you use frequently - they can do this on islands.

Get some gas fireplaces - they are so nice. Love Mine!

Fridge: I like the glass doors of the commercial ones. Somewhat like a florists fridge.

I am sick of granite counter tops there is a much better alternative now that is a composite synthetic.

Be sure you get a big big sink with a long necked faucet.

What ever you buy, be sure they all have the "Energy Star" for energy conservation and savings in your utility bills.
(cloths dryers are not given Energy Star ratings because they are all the same as far as energy use)

My Mom loves her microwave that cooks two ways: microwaves and conventional.
