Whenever one's playing hard rock, and in use of a distortion pedal, is it necessary to pass the distorted signal through a compressor pedal? If so, what does it do, exactly?

no, but it can be helpful.
a compressor "evens out" the sound levels, so when you switch from one pedal to the other there is not a huge volume increase or decrease, or when you play a note really hard or really soft a compressor will "compress" the note to make it closer to a given central volume.
you can fix the levels yourself, but a compressor just makes it easy.

No, it's not necessary. But you might want to experiment with it and without it to hear what you like best. robertkeeley.com has a good explanation of the effect chain and why certain pedals work better in certain spots in the chain. A compressor basically "squashes" the louder parts of your playing and keeps your signal at an even level and it generally adds sustain, as well.
