I know this sounds like a straight-forward question but I mean, do they want an exact date like for example 12/12/2006? What if you can start as soon as possible? Should you put tommorow's date or the date of monday next week or what?

Just put your honest answer. The employer you are applying to wants to know honestly. Sometimes this is a negotiation point during the interview as well.

If you have a project at your current job that needs to get finished you may want to put a date after that. If you can start as soon as possible, put that. It's up to you. And yes, specific dates are fine.

I always put "2 weeks after notice" to communicate that I have to do a two week notice for my current employer. If your availability changes when you are in/out of school, communicate that in the "hours available to work" section. If you don't have a job you need to leave if accepted for this position, answer "open" then reference the school dates to them if they ask.

If you can start now, just put down the same date. If you are currently employed elsewhere, give them 2 weeks notice for a contingency plan.

I always put down two weeks after I leave my present job.

That way they know that you will not quit without giving notice.
