A friend's 14 year old was arrested over the weekend for residential burglary and because there was a gun in the car (scary thought, they were all young teens) he and the other boy in the front seat were charged with possession of a handgun as well.
Does anybody know what they normally do to teens in that situation?
He has no priors.

"ratting someone out" is not much of an option for him, I'm thinking that it's gang related.

It all depends on the state here in Florida they will punish severely for the gun maybe a few years in Juvenal hall probation etc.At 14 the fact that they were committing the Bulgar plus the gun shows serious criminal activity if there were any other unsolved burglaries in the area they might have committed those as well but they didn't get caught so sounds like they are in serious trouble even without prior convictions, if the gun was loaded it will be even more trouble. So hopefully he won't get such a harsh sentence and if he gets out of this with minor complications hopefully he will have learned his lesson, its really just bad parenting and don't tell me its not i have several kids and two of them are teens the way my husband and i have their lives set up they not only have no time for trouble they have great respect for all their fellow human beings and would never so much as take a piece of gum that was someone Else's if more parents took a moment to really see what their kids were doing lots of kids wouldn't land in this situation and one more thing at 14 my two teens were not allowed to go with any one of driving age unless we knew them or there family extremely well so if you try hard enough it's possible to keep you kids out of trouble you just have to care enough to do so.

I totally depends on the state. I am in Ohio and my daughter on her 15th b-day did the exact same thing with 3 other girls in New York with a knife. In NY she could have been tried as an adult and senteced as an adult (5-25yrs) and at 16 she would be in an adult facility. tried as a child and senteced as a child 0-3 yrs in a juv facility and probation.,to be served in NY. Or tried as an adult and senteced as a juvinile offender which is what she got. she did 4 months with 5 yrs adult parole.to be done in Ohio. the girl with the knife got 3 1/2 yrs and cannot get out a day early even with good behavior. Partially because she drove the girls to NY.None of them had any priors. PS the judge went against the recommendation of the probation department they thought they should do a year.

Given the seriousness of the charges (Possession and Burglary, Breaking and Entry, depending on the jurisdiction and whether or not the crimes are seperated by degrees), most likely he could be facing charges as an adult. At least the gun wasn't used, right? If so--it is most definite. Also, these type of crimes can be brought in as felonies--meaning more stiffer penalties on conviction.

Have you sat down and told your mom what your thinking? She has a right to know first, then if nothing changes for the better, you should go talk to your school councilor or a close adult that you trust, maybe an aunt or grama. If your having thoughts on suicide, you need to talk to some one to help you with your depression and get you through this. You can NOT do this on your own my dear. Tell your mom. There is family councilling that you all can go to and by the sounds of it you need it. Please don't do anything rash, you would be punishing the people you love the most if you do. There is help, just ask.

I am not positive, but I'm pretty sure a gun charge, minor or not, stays on your record. He will no longer be able to own a firearm...ever! Which isn't a bad thing, He will be tried in family court and depending on the judge, he could be sentenced with community service, time in a group home or time in a Juvinile Correction Facility.
