I knew this man who was very sweet, loving, generous but at the same time he needed a lot of attention, needed to belong and could be very closed off at times. This was all sort of average i thought..but then i found out he was a complete fraud. He lied about his family, history and friends(when he bothered to talk about them, which was seldom ever) I would even catch him lieing about little silly things, that i guess he thought would make him look better..but still taken as a whole...his whole life was a complete lie. Why would someone behave that way? This question has eaten at me practically everyday since i "got to know him", if you could call it that.

He either has something to hide or he is ashamed of his real life. Could be that he has himself convinced that that is really how his life was. Pathological or compulsive liars have a tendency over time to believe that there own lies are the truth. They have had to tell so many lies that they have themselves convinced. I have a family member that is like that and it bugs the crap out of me cause I can't see how they can keep up with the charade and not care about the ppl around them that they hurt.

Quite often, I think, they don't feel the real them is good enough. They will tell you what you want to hear to make you happy/like them. Soon lies become easier than the truth. They don't even have to think about it anymore. I think it is a cop out for people with low self esteem. i had two friends that behaved this way. One learned that it was ok to tell the truth and we would still like her. The other....he made a lot of people very unhappy when the truth came to light and we are no longer friends due to his poor choices.

I assume you aren't asking about the obvious, "Married guy fails to tell pretty girl he has a wife & kids." scenario. :)

To them it's normal, they have no sense of self worth and they handle it that way for whatever reasons..bad childhood, mom's a crackhead, the dog died, whatever..

It's who they are and it is normal for them and that's OK. Sadly, these people are usually happier than those of us that worry about them...
