Della Reese started out as a singer. She's probably the most credible singer turned actor I can think of. As far as more recent examples, Eminem did a pretty decent job in 8 Mile, and IceCube isn't too unbelievable.

Ice Cube is good but his roles are very similar.
Will Smith has done a very well in very diverse roles from a gay con man to a badass cop to one of the greatest boxers of all time.
Ice T should also get a nod of recognition. He would have thought the man who sang the infamous Cop Killer song would be a very believable detective on Law and Order.

Rick Springfield. But then again there's Harry Connick, Jr. too. I'd say it's a tie. If i go only for one, the latter would have my vote. But then again am not sure whether they're actor-turned -musician or otherwise
