Hi - I have a problem -- for a few weeks now I have been getting hang ups on my home phone line -- sometimes it goes to a message and you just hear chatter in the background -- they call 2-3 times a day. Tonight it went to the machine and i heard the background noise like before so i picked it up and said 'hello'. It was a girl and she said "I am looking for...and said my name (i have an unusual name and she said it correctly) I said, 'Speaking' and she hung up. I am home alone and i am getting nervous -- what does this mean? Very few people even have my #.... what can I do to find out who it is -- and/or stop it??
please help
thanks!

I do not have caller ID --
but I can sign up for *69 -- do you think the phone company ATT can trace the call from tonight?

Your supposed to report prank calls if you have a caller I.D. system do so, and change your number.

They might have found your number from the telephone book. There could be a lot of people that knows your number that you don't know they do. You can sign up for *69. When you find out who it is, tell them to stop and if they still don't, report it to the police. They are harassing you by calling you this way and they have no business to do so.

Have you ordered anything lately by phone? or over the internet and they asked for your phone number? If you have you may want to call and ask to be put on the 'do not call list'. My suggestion is to call the number back tell then you saw the numbe ron the caller id and was returning the call. It could be an old boyfriend or girlfriend tho.

I'd get caller ID. It isn't cheap, but I have it and consider it invaluable. But it may not help if the pests are using ID blocking; in that case, go the *69 route, or let the answering machine pick up all calls. You can get answering machines that will not accept ID-blocked calls.

Do you have *69? Can you get the number traced? That would be my first reaction. Maybe the phone company can help you, unless the number is unlisted. I assume you have caller ID and the number is unidentified.
I would definitely get your number changed, too.

in alberta you can hit *69 and trace where the call is coming from. it will give you the number of the person who has called. you can then report them to the police and have them charged.
you can also tell them that you are having the call traced or something like that when they call.
have had this happen in the past and it is scary. but that is why they are doing it.

press *67. Get caller id, or call your phone company to report harrasing calls. You shouldn't have to have to change your # because some moron desides it's funny to play on the phone.
