Christy is right, there is no real definative proof one way or the other on how anyone got to the americas. Some theories even include sea fareing people who followed the tides in primitive boats, much like the ancient Hawaiians.
The most common theory is the land bridge, and the thoery is not that it was made of ice, rather the water levels had lowered because of an ice age and exposed slivers of land connectiong asia to north america, animals began to migrate across this pass and the humans who used the animals to survive followed.
And as for being called Indians, there is no real answer to that, I happen to be an American INDIAN. Some people have a prefrence one way or the other, but its best to avoid the PC police and say Native americans.
Which is actualy strange because the original "natives" were asians, so to be politicaly politicaly correct I am a native asian whos ancestors migrated to the american continent... I hate PC.
Oh and to make this more confusing there are thoeries that people from africa (egypt specificaly) also ended up in the americas and brought the ideas of Pyramid buiilding, thanks to Thor Hererdahl's voyages, but even he thought that idea was a little loony.

They crossed the Bering Straight 12,000 years ago from northern Russia to Alaska. At the time, the Straight was actually a land bridge made mostly of ice. Interestingly, genetic studies have shown that Native Americans carry genes from only 70 people who crossed the land bridge, meaning that their whole populations descended from those same 70 people. All others who crossed the bridge and their descendants died out over time.

there has been discovered a pathway that is now 384 feet under water alongf the coast of alaska that exhibits mammoth kill sites and associated human-made tools, flints ans atl-atl type weapons !!this would indicate that water levels have altered radically over time and these dispositions and carbon dating techniques may pinpoint exact dates of approaches into the americas from asian game movements back and forth where the present bering sea is and where a lowered water level would perhaps make movement between asia and america a journey by foot instead of an even more realistic voyage of a people well able to construct a vessel to do so!!!

They walked from Asia/Russia around 13,000 years ago. According to DNA evidence, there were 2 migrations. They took about 200 years to reach the bottom of South America.

all the ideas everyone has posted are "theories" and not factual because the truth is, no one really knows how the native Americans got to America... in addition, how anyone reached the Americas before the 1500's really.
we may find out eventually, but as of now, there is not a concrete answer.
