Dont stop doing what you love if thats what you love, but sometimes it doesnt work out, so have a back up. While doing that, have something else in mind and keep working. As for getting into the business, if thats what you want, put yourself out there. Get into talent shows, record yourself, perform at yard sales, carnivals, make a myspace with your music on it and add people, make a video and put it on youtube... whatever. If you want it that bad, work hard, practice, and make an effort to get out there because things like that wont easily come to you.

First off forget connections. I think Howard Stern knows a good bit about the music business, and an aspiring musician lamented, "I don't have any connections". Howard chastized the guy and said did Kurt Cobain or Eiminim, or Snoop Dog have any connections? Nope. As far as the small town, again, pick any performers on the charts today, you will see people from all types of places. If you are an artist you need to circle back to your art and dig in. If you want a garden, you have to have dirty fingernails. Do you know who Robert Johnson is? Have you sat alone and listened to Dust My Broom 20 times in a row? I just saw Eric Clapton on an interview. He said he and his friends would listen to records of all types for days at a time.
Collaborate with talented people. Seek out experts and listen to what they have to say. Good luck.

Find a real career. You will not suceed as a rapper in a world where every other person desires to be one. the fact that you live in a small town ( meaning a small audience ) and no connections ( no recording deals ) just makes this an even worse idea. SHould you decide to go for your dream despite my advice ALWAYS have something to fall back on incase of failure, which is more than probable.

just like any other famous rappers around, they too started out small in the community. What you can do at this point is do something to be noticed. Like go to bars, ask a dj if you could make a sample of your rap abilities, or better yet, join a reality show where it will be asking you to rap..

Try to land gigs at a local bar or club. If you dont have time to find gigs then have a friend become your manager and set gigs up for you. My sister in law has a friend who wants to start a recording studio and is looking for up and coming rappers, you could send me an email with a link to an upload of your music and I could see if they are interested in it.

the cheapest way to promote yourself is to put your music on a myspace band page.. and send out friend requests out to thousands of people. Lots of artists have been discovered using myspace.com

Dude, you have the internet, don't you?

Ding! There's one connection.

Got some cheapo recording software? There's your other connection. Don't hog; share, and your name will get out there.
That one's cheesy, but free.
