I have a Pent.4 running Win.XP with an Optus Surfboard Cable Modem, 12mbps connection....and I want to connect the internet upto my other computer Pent.3 running Win.98. I just bought and installed a TP-LINK 10/100M Fast Ethernet Adapter on the Pent.3. I now have a D-Link Ethernet Broadband router...how do I go about connecting it up, installing it and setting up a network?

Ok lets start...
1. There is a cord going from your modem to your computer right now, it is an ethernet cable (looks like a bigger version of a phone cable) that is your "line".
2. Look at the back of the router... there should be several inputs for the ethernet cables. if it's a four port router (standard) then there should be 5 of these jacks. One will be labeled WAN (wide area network) and the other four will be labeled 1-4.
3. Connect the ethernet cable from the modem to the WAN input on your modem.
4. Connect your computers to the jacks labeled 1-4 on the router.
5. NOTE YOU MAY NEED TO UNPLUG YOUR ROUTER AND MODEM FROM POWER, THEN PLUG THE MODEM IN, THEN PLUG THE ROUTER IN (to synch them together).
6. On your first computer (lets pick the XP) click on start>RUN
and type in COMMAND.COM this should bring up your Command window... Type in "ipconfig /release *Con*" (it may error out saying you don't have an ip to release, that's normal)
After that completes, type in "ipconfig /renew" [without quotes for either command] hopefully that should bring you some information in the command window about your new ip (which should be something like (192.168.1.X X-being a number from 2 to 255) if that is so then you have successfully setup your router. For windows 98 machine, try restarting it, hopefully it catches the new ip... if not send me a message and i'll lead you through that

Hope everything goes good for you!

Your router has 4 switch ports which are used for connecting pc's and laptops.

It will have another port that will be used to connect directly to your cable modem with a patch cord.

Go into the network settings on the pc's and setup your network cards for dhcp. This will allow them to get an ip address from the router when they boot up.

Your router will probably be setup for dhcp by default, so the main thing to do once you've taken the above steps is to reboot the pc's.

If this does not work, then you should go through the router setup wizard to setup the router ...
