The heat rises and the mantle gets hot. Is there any way to divert the heat forward into the room instead of it going upward? The fireplace has a small metal lip over the glases in area ( about! 1/2 inches deep)

We have a slow burning fireplace with ceramic glass doors. We have a fan (blower) that came with the unit to redirect the heat into the room. Find out if you can install one of these fans. If you know where the fireplace came from, where it was purchased, go back to them. You might even consider calling the manufacturer. They should be able to give you additional information.

You want to go to Lowes or Home Depot. I just looked at there grate fireplace units. The logs sit on this and there tubes with blowers, they blow the heat out. I'm amazed you haven't seen this type of heat. It's been on the market for many years. In fact we were making our own up in Northern Minnesota many years ago when they first came on the market. They work well in heat distribution.

Go to a fireplace store and try to find a blower that you can install accross the mantle.
