Tell them about the eight second violation. The eight second violation makes the team go quicker. Practice them going to halfcourt as quick as possible. That is my best advise I could think about.

Depending how your offense is set up you probably won't have to worry about 3-second violations too much. Boxing out and rebounding are obviously important. Some sort of spin move down low helps a lot for opening up shots. As far as defense is concerned, try not to hack too much and take a charge if you can (assuming you'll be under the basket most of the time).

best advice i ever received i was an undersized high school post at 6'1'' 150lbs getting guarded by 6'5'' 210lbs or more! keep a good solid base and react to how he is trying to guard you! everytime he tries to move to a side move your feet and get a wide base and pin him that way if they pass into you when he comes over top to try knock the pass away he can not make a play on the shot! i did this for 4 years and averaged 15 points and 9 rebounds! always keep a wide base you can not be pushed around as easy and on defense be smart know what the guy you are guarding is capable of if he is capable of knockind down a 15 foot jump shot and score on the block be ready to work all night if he can only shoot stay bodied up! if he can only score down low remove the chair at least once a game on someone if they keep putting there body against you just move out of the way and let them fall down! after that normally you own them! big ben does that more than anybody! they fall turn the ball over and feel stupid and he owns them the rest of the night!

haha o man, i remember the first time i stepped onto the court as a center/forward. it was so different then playing in the parks or messing around...plus the guys were just as big as me if not bigger. it can be really intimidating! here are some tips for you (i am a former player/coach)

OFFENSE
rebound rebound rebound. if you are playing on a lower level (nonvarsity/college/pro) odds are that your guards are not good enough to get you the ball where and when you need it. you will have to make alot of shots happen yourself through offensive rebounding. make sure that when your guards shoot you IMMEDIATELY box your man out, and focus on just boxing him out until the ball hits the rim. Once it does, get moving and grab that bad boy and put it back in. make sure not to jump over the top of someone to grab a rebound because that will be an offensive foul.
Also, make sure that you are not standing with a foot inside the key for more than 2 seconds at a time; 3 seconds and you make a turnover for your team, and the other team gets the ball. when a shot goes up though, you can stand in the key for as long as you need to rebound.
when you go to set a screen for a teammate, make sure that you stop and stand still as the other player runs into you; if you are moving its an offensive foul.
if you get the ball inside the key or close to the basket, make a strong move to the rim to score. don't bother kicking it back out to a teammate if you are in a one on one situation. you will have a higher percentage chance of making a shot because you are close to the hoop.

DEFENSE.
HANDS UP!!! you want to start my standing with your hands out, parallel to the ground.
rebound as best as you can, following what i described above. if you face a taller, stronger player then you, then just box him out and instead of leaving the ground to grab the rebound, continue to box him out until he goes over your back and gets his foul. it will work ALL the time. : ) its how i, at 6'2, defended a 7'0 player repeatedly over the years. they never learn, they follow instincts.
also on defense when u attempt to block a shot jump STRAIGHT UP in the air, dont lean forward, otherwise you will get called for a foul.

good luck!

I played center in high school, college, and as a professional.

The key is to stay on good balance, be quick (move your feet), and be confident in yourself.

Playing center is tough: it takes strength, determination, and a drive to dominate the competition. I've got tons of great tips on my website: http://www.basketballsuccess.com

So check it out, it should help you out a lot.
Good luck!

Play each position. You under no circumstances now how tall you'll strengthen. you'd be very experienced and versatile. you'd be on the floor more desirable and be a matchup nightmare because you could in fantastic condition into any function: shooter, put up participant, ball handler and so on..

offense:
only enter the key if you are gonna get the ball right away, or else you are moving to the otherside of the key, or you don't think your guard can see you well enough (but then move right back out)
don't post up on the block, instead post up on the mark above that, this will give you a lot more room to move around
once you get the ball, try to get your man to commit to one side of you or the other, then spin the other way, using your leg on that side to seal him.
if he fronts you, get your guards to lob the ball over him, and when they do, wait until the ball is right over you to go get it
if you get double-teamed, don't throw the ball as soon as you see the guy coming, if you can wait and throw it to the guy whose man is doubling you

defense:
when he has the ball, try not to commit to one side or the other.
if he has the ball and faces up, step up as close as you can on him and keep your arms up
force him baseline

to avoid 3 second violation just be outside the key and only go in if there's a player driving in, defence umm.... just avoid your fouls and time your blocking

Never fear your opponent. Stay in front of the basket and don't foul jumpshooters.
