i know the average cycle is 28 days, but does being on birth control automatically set you up with that cycle or does it affect it at all?

Yes, it does for me.

My cycle without the Pill (if my period came) used to be 31 days.

After the first couple of months it should do exactly that. There are however new pills which can give you a period every 3 months and one that can give you a shorter period(around 4 days) every month, but your cycle will still remain 28 days.

birth control pills will normalize your era to 20-eight days. once you burst off them your era would or would no longer go back on your 40-40 5 day cycle. I took the pill because of an erratic cycle that would go everywhere from 25-40 days (complicated to plot something). after I result so as to get pregnant my era normalized to a 30 day cycle.
