What size violin would a petite 5'2" 26 year old woman usually play? 4/4? 3/4?

Go with a full size, or 4/4.
I'm pretty short, (5'1"), and I've been using a full size for a couple of years (I'm 15). But, to make sure that you have the right size violin, put the violin on her left shoulder, as she would to play, and extend out her left arm under the violin. Then, wrap the fingers of the hand around the scroll, and if she can do so, then it's the right size! If her arm's a little short, you can go with the 3/4 size.

I wrote an article about buying your first violin. http://www.violinstudent.com/buyingaviolina.html You can go there if you want to see some info on buying a violin. But it also has a size chart. If you don't feel like reading through the article, here is a synopsis of the size info.

Extend your arm out perpendicular from your body with your palm facing up. Have someone measure from your neck to the center of your wrist.

Violin Size .... Arm Length in Inches (I hope this chart shows up formated right)

4/4 .................... 23
3/4 .................... 22
1/2 .................... 20
1/4 .................... 18 1/2
1/8 ................ 16 1/2
1/10 .................. 15
1/16 .................. 14

I've seen violins that were even smaller (1/32 and 1/64), but my own thoughts are that if a child needs something that small he is probably too young to take lessons seriously. I would probably suggest playing music games with the child at that point rather than concentrating on an instrument.

But I digress, and that doesn't apply to you.

The best bet is arm measurement. And my guess is that you will probably be more comfortable with a 3/4. I would buy the more comfortable instrument if the sound quality was the same.

If I can be of any more help let me know.

4/4 violin is best. Damn, I'm 13, I play a 4/4. 3/4 violins are for like, the younger violinists. Like 11 and under.
