My 5 month old always grabs his blanket and covers his head to sleep...he will not sleep another way. this concerns me because of SIDS, is there any alternative or something I can do to try to get him to not do this? This leaves me with sleepless nights because I am constantly checking him.

Mine did this also up until a few month ago. They are linking SIDS to other issues so I dont know if a blanket over the head will be a direct one. I would just go in his room after he fell asleep and take it off.

My son likes to do that as well. I stopped swaddling him a while ago, but what I found out just recently, is that at 4 months he still does not object swaddling. That might be your solution. What I like to do is to dress my son in something that has sleeves and cover him with the blanket only up to his chest, securing it in place by pushing the blanket under baby's back on both sides.

I heard that scientists have discovered a gene that would make a baby susceptible to SIDS, which means his sleeping position or habits don't matter as much as it was thought before. However, it wouldn't hurt to make a little research on that subject. I can't tell you not to worry, but you got to get some good sleep - that's tremendously important for your baby.

Good luck.

Get some info on the monitor before you buy it as I ave heard it can go off for no reason, and turn a mother even into more of a wreck. Sids has so many contributing factors, and is really not all that common anymore. As long as you are following all the safeguards, try not to worry. Don't let him get to warm either, no blankets, no smoking, drinking, etc. i am sure you are aware of them all. paranoia is a part of being a mother, but when it starts interfering with your sleep, you really need to talk to your doc. Get someone to watch the baby so you can have a nap. Sleep deprivation just makes things worse. You need some help right now. good luck...

I had a baby die of SIDS and what you are concerened about is suffocation not SIDS. Suffocation is NOT the same thing as SIDS. SIDS is also not just linked to parents that smoke in the house. Nobody ever smoked aroudn my daughter and she still died. Anything that can cause your baby to suffocate like, pillows, blankets, co-sleeping, laying on the tummy face down, is not SIDS. SIDS is when an otherwise healthy baby suddenly stops breathing for no reason after the completion of an autopsy. Suffocation is just that suffocation so it is not the same thing as SIDS. Just use common sense, you know your babies capabilities better than anyone else.

try a sleep sack which is a wearable blanket. Or...try a knit blanket with a weave that allows a lot of air through. Honestly, I think you shouldn't worry that much about it. Kids have some weird sleep soothers and if you can get a full night's sleep in at 5 months, take it! You've earned it!

I too was up constantly, checking my kids, and now at 9 and 6, I still get up. however... I thought the same way you did, but it was a misconception. One day, I was sharing my worries with one of my closest friends, and she said, that if your baby is going to die with SIDS, even if your in the bed with him, you cant stop it.
(she had an aunt, that their baby was in the bed with them, and they were still awake, and the baby started turning blue, when they arrived at the hospital, he had passed away, and the autopsy said, SIDS. AND...they assured them that there was nothing that they could do.)
Quit panicking, and enjoy your baby. You know how much you love him, God loves him even more. Just trust him.
Merry Christmas!

The baby is now 5 months old...if he is coordinated enough to pull the blanket up, he is probably safe from SIDS. SIDS stands for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, and is linked with newborns who have smokers in the house. Also infants who are laid on their stomachs to sleep and aren't able to turn their heads and, sadly, suffocate. If your still worried, don't allow him to have a blanket.

at 5 months he should be in a sleep sack still. Covering his head can result in him breathing in carbon dioxide and sufficate. I suggest taking out blankets and putting him in a sleep sack or a warn outfit. You can get sleep sacks at places like toys r us or off of the first candle web site.
** edited to say that sufficating is now labeled as SIDS.

I wouldnt stress it. As long as the blanket is small and wont like sufficate him. But sids is like sleeping on their stomachs when they are too small. My child does that sometimes too... hes five months as well.

I wouldnt worry, my babies slept with pillows from the time they were newborns they also shoved their blankies in their mouth when they slept and they turned out fine, it used to scare me but they would wake up and cry if i tried to pull the blankies out of their mouth lol
