1. clerks were university-type students. all university work was done through churches then. a modern archetype would be a graduate student, maybe.

2. parsons were preachers. and teachers. a modern version of that would be a pastor.

3. millers were associated with agriculture, but had some business sense along with their ability to do physical labour. by the description given, it sounds like a professional wrestler or something to me.

4. plowman worked in the fields and were thought to be close to god because of their steady work (piers plowman). a farmer in the american midwest seems to be a modern version of that to me.

1) Oxford Clerk = wikipedia via Google : a student of Theology or Philosophy
2)Parson = Minister, Preacher or Priest !
3)Miller= then was a the guy a farmer took his grain to ,
for the miller to make it into flour ! Nowadays the miller would be equal to a huge conglomerate or corporation , as there are very few real individual "Miller's" now ! If you can find a 'Gristmill' or a place where corn or grains are ground into meal, that fellow would be a 'Miller' !
4)Plowman=Farmer
