A sound card provides the hardware so that your computer can play music, make sounds like the ones you hear when you perform tasks, etc.
Most current computers have what is called integrated sound rather than an actual card.

A sound card is a card that changes the data in the computer into sound. It is usually built into the motherboard, and the only evidence of it will usually be the microphone and audio connectors.
Some computers have sound cards not built into the motherboard, and which are usually located on one of the slots inside the case, with connectors coming out of the back of the computer on those panels.

A sound card is a board that usually slides into a PC's pci slot. You connect your speakers to it. On most motherboards today the audio is built into it so you won't have to buy an actual sound card.
