Freedom of choice. For obvious reasons: to be who I am, to do what I love, to love who I want.

The famous Existentialist philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre once said that "all men are doomed to be free." Basically, he was saying that we can change our situation because we're aware of our situation. But, that awareness also means that we're ultimately responsible to take advantage of our freedom.

Philosophers since Sartre have had a more anti-humanist approach. Derrida showed how language keeps us from being free - we are doomed to the thought patterns and categories allowed by our language. Foucault showed how institutions in society promote ideas that keep us from freedom. Even Marx was able to show that freedom (and our understanding of the universe & its truths) is based on the modes of production (technology).

So are we free or not free? I think freedom is what happens when you can take action in your life to improve your situation *and* when you learn something. By learning something (a new fact, idea, how to use a machine or tool), you have expanded your language, and quite possibly found ways to attack instutions or expanded your understanding of the world through the use of a new tool. That's what freedom means to me.

The idiots who say everything that comes to there mouths without engaging their brains. As irritating as they are, as much as I hate them, I love them because that is the greatest symbol of freedom you could ask for, the freedom to make a fool of yourself , to hold yourself up to public scorn and ridicule by talking about things you have no knowledge of. Only in a land of truly free people could this happen.

Freedom is asking or answering a legitimate question without yahoo deleting it like this one.
THE SS will give me a violation notice for this answer plus a few more. I seem to be getting too many points so they're going out of their way to cut me down.

Total freedom for me is walking along the shoreline of any ocean, lake or body of water. While I am walking I can keep my mind totally free of all my problems. If I'm by the ocean, I like to collect shells, stones, and any other interesting objects. I like to watch the sea life in tide pools also.

freedom to me is looking at the flag and remembering what a privilege I have living in this great country. Sometimes I feel like my vote doesn't matter, but then I remember how much blood was shed to allow me to vote. Susan B Anthony would be ashamed of us women today!

The sky comes to mind first, then the wind. There is no limit to what the sky can hold, and the wind goes wherever it will. What could be more free than that?
