I think its guys ages 18-24. Guys in High School or College. Most of my friends in this age range play football games like Madden and NCAA Football. Sports games. I dont know too many of your average gamer in this age to play anything like RPGs. Systems vary depending on financial situations.
I'm personally a female game and my network of other females that are real gamers like me is pretty slim to none. I actually only personally know 2 others.
I know there is a big community of us out there but its tiny in comparison to the number of men who play.

The age range isn't so much as it is a generation range. The Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) was released in North America in 1985, and so children then had access to videogames. Back then, videogames appealed mostly to boys and tomboys. I'd say that anyone born 1970 or later would have a chance at playing an NES. And back then, it was mostly geeks. You also have to remember that after the Videogame Crash of 1983, following the release of horrid Atari titles like ET, many people were distrustful of videogames. Around the turn of the decade, we saw the Super Nintendo and Genesis, and more and more people got into videogames, even if it was just a casual hobby. Even my own grandmother, in her 60s at that time, got into games on the Super Nintendo, but she's a bit of a statistical anomoly. Anyway, by the time of the Nintendo 64, PlayStation, and Dreamcast (I base things on Nintendo thus far because that's what I had and what I remember things by) almost a decade ago, and by that time almost everyone I knew was playing a game system of some sort. Not all "gamers" per se, the captain of the basketball team was really into games as well.
To shorten this, they're mostly people born between 1970 and now, and are more likely to be male. Some might be older geeks who have moved from arcade games, tabletop RPGS, and comics to videogames, and what they play varies widely.

There are many different people that play different games for different reasons. I know this sounds general but that's exactly what gaming is. this is why there's different genres (Action,Adventure,Puzzle,RPG) In my opinion Gaming is as diverse as The people who play them. Sometimes it's the shy kid who doesn't have many friends in school. Sometimes it's the guy who wants to blow up some Virtual people in war games. or people who want to exercise their brains with puzzle games(Tetris,Lumines,Every Extend Extra) or Someone who plays Music games like DDR or Guitar Hero because games have come so far in through the years that it can more realistically simulate the nuances of making music. Sorry got long winded hope this helps.

I know people from 6 to age 70 ( no really ) that play everything from Solitare on the PC like my Mom-to my older brothers and thier friends in the mid to late 30's having all nite Katamari Damacy battles. It just depends on who you like playing with, and what you like playing. I play all sorts of things, from RPG's to Racers to FPS's like the infamous Halo. There's no one gamer age range anymore, especially with Nintendo & Xbox Live Arcade offering the "casual" gaming experiences.
