I want to be a lawyer so that I can defend those who are mistreated and misrepresented. I see it all my life and it's the humanitarian in me, I guess...so I was wondering why they are hated.

Lawyers are parasites on all of society. I have seen good quality industry put into bankruptcy by lawyers filing bogus suits--just to line their pockets. Even Jesus did not like Lawyers. They operate like tape worms to bring down the standard of living of all societies while producing nothing and lining their own pockets!

If you become an attorney you're not realistically going to be able to choose only clients who are purely mistreated and misrepresented, and for any client you're going to have to voice arguments that you know to be incomplete and misleading versions of the whole truth. A lawyer's role is to represent a client's interest without any responsibility to truth or justice. Most people instinctively feel this is immoral (would you tolerate it in your children?)

That's why people hate lawyers.

To say that Jesus did not like lawyers, as one commented on this website, is a lie, for Jesus loves all so much, that He gave his life on the cross. In a sense, Jesus is a lawyer, because He is the Lord, who gave the law in the Old Testament. He was smarter than the lawyers, because He is our creator. In a sense, those who believe in Jesus are "acquitted" of their sins. He actually is a defender of those who believe in Him, and is the best defense attorney around. Dave

Some people hate lawyers because MOST people can only afford mediocre ones and, as goes with most things in life, you get what you pay for. So in other words, most have limited dealings with good lawyers unless they have lots of money, which is the minority of the populous.

because they don't all work for justice, but against people in general. remember, for people, you are only as equal before the law as you can afford to be. the more you can afford, the more equal you are. and lawyers keep it that way! just look at how long they keep from settling a simple tort claim just so their client won't have to pay for anything, and waiting for the claimant to accept pennies for what should be thousands, or millions, in compensation for being wronged. and how many people have gone to prison because he couldn't afford a good attorney, or gone free because he could afford thousand dollar an hour lawyers to get him off! guilt and innocence mean nothing. good attorneys get bad people off, while poor people get sent to prison for lack of competant legal representation.

if you are intrested in the law, you should not worry about other people's perception on lawyers. there are lawyers who operate on integrity, okay? trust me. the most important foundation which shapes any lawyer is the first place where he undergoes training/pupilage. the trainee's master's views on every day life will somehow or rather shape the very being of the trainee in the future. alternatively, if you hate practising after a year or two, you can always venture into other areas, such as, broadcasting, journalism or writing.

You have never needed one, have you? Most lawyers turn out to be politicians or judges. Look at them and you will know why.

Lawyers have expanded the need for their services by making the law as convoluted as possible. I have an attorney I pay a yearly fee to. He is extremely skilled but I have -9000 degrees of personal respect for him. I only utilize him as a need, otherwise, I wouldn't cross the street to pee on him if he were on fire. He has no noticeable integrity of any kind, he is a vicious man when he is not representing you, he has been cheating on his wife & his mistress with a third woman and pays no attention to his children. He makes no distinction between right and wrong, and has told me that as long as one does not get caught, they have committed no wrong. That about sums it up for me.... :)
