i bought a car 2 months ago,very neatly redone.but the parts used were incorrect.oversized compression rings were installed on standard pistons.i've replaced everything and it's now time for putting the engine back.i need to no ''on the pulley's,where would the timing marks have to be placed?''[it's a 1985 VW golf jumbo]

Well turn the engine over untill the #1 pistion is at top dead center.
This will be 0 So set the mark on 0
Now it that is 0 and the piston is at tdc andd there is 360 Degrees in a circle, then mark it off in 1 degrees so lets say it fires at 8degrees befor tdc. Then it will be set at 8 on the flywheel.
