I think Watchmen, as mentioned above is a good choice for any comic book lover. Also, the Fables trades are a good choice, as it is one of the strongest series going currently. However, it is more Fantasy oriented than Sci-Fi. Another very good series is Rising Star, which is a bit more Sci-Fi. They just released the absolute collection, though that is a bit pricey at $100. You can still get the first trade for under 20, which may be better. The most difficult thing of course is trying to find something he does not currently have. Each of these are quite popular because they are so good, and he could already own them. If not, then he should. Comic book paraphernalia is difficult to buy, as people are often quite picky about it, and unless you know his favorite series/characters, I would not go that route.

How about a mini-statue (or regular sized statue) of one of his favorite sci-fi characters. Or an action figure from the Stargate SG-1 series, if he likes Stargate.
Go to http://www.tfaw.com or http://entertainmentearth.com to see what types of gifts are available.
Also, try to steer a conversation towards what sci-fi things he likes. Then google the item. You'd be surprised how many items are available on the internet.

Try to find out what kind of comics they like, or, get them some original comic art, or maybe a signed comic issue, good luck, and have fun...

Best thing to do is to get him a gift certificate from his comic book store. That way, you don't run the risk of getting him something he doesn't like, or something he already has.

If you can find out his favorite series or character, alot of clothing stores now are selling t-shirts based upon popular comic book characters.

You can buy the products of the comic book.For example,I love Prince of Tennis.My friend gave me Prince of Tennis tarot cards.I was so excited.It was a wonderful present!
