An all A/B report card is very excellent in today's education system for a high schooler--so it goes double for a 10 year old (I'm guessing 4th grade here, which is starting to get harder for kids than you'd think!). After all--she's probably not choosing college admissions yet!!! As for the gerbil--ask her if she has other options for this, explain to her you really don't like gerbils, perhaps she'll ask for a guinea pig or hampster! Or--you could surprise her with something special for the good grades!! She did excellent, and is no failure!!! As for the something special--what does she like to do? Where would she like to spend the day or something like that. Money is usually a good idea--but, if you go this route, keep it simple, or prepare to pay big later. Also--keep encouraging her to continue the good study habits that gave her the good report card in the first place! Congratulations and continued good luck.

You shouldn't have to get her anything - you should expect good performance and then reward her on your terms. When I was going to school, I got a milkshake for a straight A report card - that is all, and I was proud to get it, but that wasn't why I was making good grades (my Mom & Dad expected me to do my best). I know that as a parent you have to put up with the peer pressure that other kids going to school put on your daughter. Unfortunately, kids have to learn to deal with that too. Good luck, but I would just take her out for pizza and tell her that you are so proud of her. Otherwise, the gift getting will never end. Oh, by the way, I hate gerbils too.

Take her to MacDonald's. Use to when we did good you could take the card there and get a free hamburger. But tell her if she gets all A's the rest of the year she can have her gerbil. She deserves it then.

Rewarding children for doing their best is a time honored tradition. And the fact your daughter has all A's and B's for that effort is wonderful.

I think parents should reward a child with all C's too, if the child did their best. I believe in rewarding the real effort.

But a gerbil? That's too close to a nasty rat. My daughters had these huge nasty rats for years. Walking around the mall with a rat wrapped around their neck. If I weren't such a wuss, I probably would have said no.

Maybe a gerbil isn't so bad, now that I think about it. Much cuter than a rat and all.

I Say you get her the gerbil, but if you hate them that much: take her out for a nice dinner. Let her know she did a great job!

if you dont want her to get a gerbil than just tell her that she did a great job. You dont really need to get a gift for good grades. It sort of like bribing her.

When I was younger.. every A that I got I would get $10 for each one.. every B $5 and every C $1... anything below that.. I would get nothing for each D or F.

So for 6 A's.... that equals $60... seems kind of outrageous.. but you could always lower the amount to $5 for A's

She's ten. It's not that hard to get all good grades when you're in the 4th or 5th grade! She doesn't need a huge present. You're going to spoil her. Wait until she does something that is REALLY worthy of a gift.

In elementary, a's are easy to get. The lowest grade i got was a b in k-5. But you should get her the gerbil, not because of the grades, but because it teaches responsibility.

I really don't think it's ever a good idea to give a kid a pet as a present.
Money or other incentives are good, but maybe just praise and a nice dinner would work just as well.
Rember that in life you don't get much more than normal for a job well done, if anything. Get your daughter used to that fast
