Okay, my question headline is just to get your attention. I know hermit crabs mate. But...I heard some where that they only mate in water. Is this true? Because I just bought my hermit crab that I've had for 2 years a tank buddy...and they're really getting along. I just wondered if it was possible for them to mate in their aquarium. I'm not sure what sex either is...I'm just wondering.

While it's possible, I don't think you'll be having any hermit babies anytime soon. Like many other "exotic" pets, the breeding conditions have to be perfect, and if you're only keeping them as regular pets, without the intention of breeding, you won't be creating the correct environment. I doubt the temperature is warm enough to encourage the crabs out of their shells to mate.

Conditions in an aquarium are not right for breeding. Hermit crabs lay eggs in the ocean. Baby crabs live in the ocean for a while feeding of plankton and other microscopic things. They molt several times then come ashore and find a shell to live in.

Hermit crabs do mate but they need the sea because the bub's start off as plankton.
