But, PKU affects cellular metabolism. The basics go like this: Phenylalanine is an amino acid. (Protein component) In phenylketonuria, the cells are unable to utilize that amino acid, and it builds up, causing cell damage. This can cause brain damage in untreated patients.

The first noticeable symptom is a fruity smelling urine. If it's caught early, it can be treated with dietary changes. Phenylalanine is found in artificial sweeteners, milk, and a few other foods.
