GBA, the NinDS is too technical with how you are to interact with it and its games.. not saying your 5 year is not smart enough though. If he is a prodigy and seems to like to use crayons and stencils alot then i'd go NinDS but they offer quite few children games using that little pencil feature. GBA is your usual video game yet offer a larger children orientated catalogue and very inexpensive game bundles.

Plus you can watch movies on the GBA mostly all disney movies released the past two years are offered on GBA.

I would strongly suggest the gameboy advance over the DS for a 5 year old boy for a couple reasons. First of all, the games for the GBA are more simple to play and are directed toward a younger demographic. The touch screen on the DS requires precision and coordination that the majority of kindergarteners lack. Secondly, the GBA can withstand more of a beating than a DS. This is so because not only does the DS have more buttons, but the touch screen can easily scratch without proper care. Thinking ahead, a DS would be more appropriate for an 8-year-old, but for now the GBA is more appropriate for its durability and demographic.

perhaps because i have a 7 year old brother, i would suggest the gameboy advance

the date that they stop making games is irrelevent - most games are timeless. for example - super mario 3 (which, by the way, is available on gba, known as super mario 4 advance)

the touch screen on the DS really is quite intuitive, and most games make decent use of it... but when seven year olds get frustrated, they might scratch the touch screen.

also, it's hard enough to get them to wash their hands sometimes. everytime i see him, i ask for the gameboy i gave him and i clean it, because it's usually covered in grease from whatever food he's eaten recently

the DS can play newer games, yes, and it can play gameboy advance games, yes, but the gameboy advance can play older gameboy games - so that library is quite big.

also, VERY important - if you get a gameboy advance, make sure you get the gameboy advance SP. i don't think they still sell regular gameboy advances, except as old, used things that cost less than 25 bucks.

the SP has an inner light, the gameboy advance has no light source - nor a natural power source. the SP has a lithium ion battery that lasts a long time (as does the DS)

I feel that A game boy Advance would be a better choice for your son. A nintendo DS has more technology that he would not even bother using. Right now game boy advance are cheaper. You don't want to feel like you wasted your money on A DS because your child gets discourage because of the technology. Let him Start of with GAme boy advance then go from there. Sometimes kids don't get into Video games and you would feel like you wasted your money if you got him the ds. I started my 5 yr old on a Game boy advance and now he is 7 and he is playing nintendo DS, and psp. So gameboy would be my beginning choice for a 5 yr old.

I think a Gameboy would be a bit tougher than a DS. My son has a Gameboy, Gameboy Advance, and a DS. There might be more age appropriate games for the Gameboy too.

I would go with a gameboy advance, because the nintendo DS has two screens and it makes game play confusing. Especially for a little child. My little brother has a gameboy advance and he loves it. I hope I helped! I also believe gameboyd advance may be cheaper then DS, but im not sure.
