I am not white and I NEVER want to be white. I am proud of my heritage and who I am. I pity these people who try to be white.

In reality, it's all a personal preference.
I white personal person trying to get darker by going to a tanning salon or spending time in the sun. Others just want to stay pasty white.
Michael Jackson took it to the extreme. He wanted to be white and bleached his skin. By that I believe he forgot where he came from. (his roots).
Others like African Americans are proud to be different.
Same goes to your question. "some of the friends that I hang with what to be white" Some, not all... Probably the confised ones.
"I have a friend who is a drak skinned hindu girl who says that she is white skinned" Just one friend, not all.
Since we are all influences by one another, your friend is brobably more influenced by the Caucasian culture, therefore she thinks that if by some way she is percieved as being more white, life will be better for her and she will receive better treatment.

Read a book call Black Like Me, about a white man who disguise him-self as a black man living in the South of the U.S.A. The author's hard-ships that he encountered ,while using the disguise, explains that it is not always easy being black. When one talks about pride of ones race ,it seems that some people have been indoctrinated into thinking that white is prettier, even to the point of jealousy of the very white-blonde one. It is all about indoctrination into thinking that one particular race is better, this is a mistake. Those thoroughly brained-washed will develop feelings of in-security. However there are many people of all races, colours who are proud in a positive, good way about their race, colour.

I agree with BretH. I am not white and nor have I ever desired to be white and nor will I ever. My friend is constantly telling me that she's ashamed of her ancestors, which I really wish she wouldn't do. Then she tans because she thinks that if she, as she puts it, "has a little color to her" she will be more exotic. I mean, what the heck is that? And the biggest thing that kills me is when she says people will look at her and see "culture" and that being white means you have no culture. I don't know if many white people feel this same way...I hope not...but just in case, I'm so glad to be truly dark and filled with culture; I would never want that to be taken away from me.
I just want people to realize that they are who they are and stop trying to be who they are not.

I assume you mean skin color. Well, that's what is prized in some of cultures. Historically, dark skin means that you are out in the sun, labor working- so dark skin to them means a lower class. Just like in the Victorian era. This isn't unusual in African American society either. Lighter skinned women tend to be more desirable than darker skinned women too. It's that way in many cultures.

It just depend on where their location is at. Maybe it's because the majority of the people around her is white, so she just wants to blend in. However, that is not true for all people.
Anyway, I'm asian and I prefer to be dark. =)
