No matter which side of the political fence you're on, I think that the odds are that you'd come back to your car and find it vandalized. Going to New York, where people lost friends and relatives, and making a silly 9-11 joke is like going to your future in-laws and shitting on their bathroom rug as a political statement against materialism.
