Because the earth takes about 24 hours to rotate and since there are 360 degrees of longitude, the earth takes 1 hour to rotate 15 degrees. This is how time zones are set up across the globe.
On the opposite side of the earth from the PRIME MERIDIAN is the International Date Line, which has a longitude of 180 degrees.
This is where the date switches ( or where the day begins ). Local noon or high noon occurs when the sun is directly on your meridian. The sun might not be directly overhead, but it is at its highest point of the day.
If the sun hasn't reached its peak yet, this is morning, or A.M, which stands for ante meridian. The afternoon time, when the sun has passed its apex is called P.M, or post meridian.
