Yes data is weightless. When data is "written" to a hard drive as a series of ones and zeros. The basic concept is that a small peice of metal "the drive head" shifts the 0s to 1s or the 1s to 0s.

Yes, I believe data is weightless because if you were to weigh your computer before the data and then after. It would weigh the same. There would be no change in weight.

Hmmm.... According to Einstein, energy has mass. So the question is, does magnetic media with data have more energy than a totally random unformatted one. Logically, a material will arrange itself into a state of lower energy. So I would expect an unmagnetized magnetic material with the domains paired up left and right to be in a lower energy state than one where the domains have been organized into bits. So, I suspect the answer is "yes". But I also suspect that the mass difference is incredibly tiny - less than the weight of a few dust particles or a bit of sweat from your fingers where you picked the drive up.

no you won't add weight by adding data.

Your hard drive is a magnetic based media. By adding data you are changing the magnetic polarity of bits on the platter. You are not adding any mass just magnetically reorienting what is already there on the platter..

To fill the drive with data, it must be connected to the motherboard using cables. The cables add weight and the drive is useless without cables.

Your hard drive stores information on rotating platters with magnetic surfaces, I imagine the process of writing would merely alter it, not make it weigh more.

The weight does not change. The magnetic bits stay the same, just change polarity.
