When friends say"how am I?" I just say fine...even when I'm not...

I'm in highschool, my friends always flake out so why should I tell them how I really am doing since they are really never there?? I can't tell when they are sincere.

But they can ramble on and on about every little crummy detail to why their life sucks. It's getting to the point why I can't show much sympathy anymore. Beacuse their lives really aren't that bad!

Some friends only want to hear about sunshine and rainbows so it's okay to find someone else to tell other things to. It doesn't mean they're not your friends or good people, just not that certain confidant type of friends. Some do not give what they take either.

It all depends on your definition of friends. If your definition of a friend is someone who will be himself/herself to you regardless of anything, never lie to you, be by your side when you need him/her.. if even when you are not doing or saying anything, your "friend" and you can share what I call a silent communication, know that you are both happy just to be together... if your friend can listen to your problems even when he/she is not feeling his/her best and be strong for you, if s/he can share with you what is really worrying him/her, if you can laugh till you cry and cry hugging each other till you get exhausted, then IT IS NOT OK to NOT be "that open" with your friend. If you dont share these things and more, then you are not friends with that person. (at least according to my definition of friendship) You are acquaintances and it is perfectly OK then.. to not be open.

it's perfectly fine not to want to put your life on display, it tends to where down the support for when you truly need it.

myself I really only have one friend I will tell the absolute truth about my life to and not in a drama kind of way. It really comes down to who you have a true sense of trust for.
