First, no one is trying to dictate whether two gays can marry. Two gays can go find any non denominational Church and get hitched. The States are choosing to institute the law of marriage as being between a male and female, as it was written and made to be.
It is gays trying to "dictate" whether this event should be recognized by Church and State.
Why should they care? They're married. Should it matter if it's in the court house? Oh but then that's not what it's about, is it? It's about "look at us, we're gay and someone's not letting us have our way and they're not letting us have our way because we're gay".
Once they get over this "better than thou" ideal then they will live better lives in the media and in their own homes.

The primary contrary argument is that it goes against traditional American values and violates the definition of marriage.
Although these, in and of themselves are true, I do not think that they are sufficient reasons to illegalise gay marriage. However, it generally assumed that any right not given to the government in the Constitution is not allowed to the government. This means that by legalizing gay marriage, the government is changing the definition of marriage and in doing so exceeding their constitutional authority. I personally agree with the constitution and think that the government should not be legislating marriage. However, it is a difficult question, because their is essentially no reason why gays shouldn't be able to marry, only a reason why the government shouldn't be able to legislate the definition of marriage. So I think you're looking at this the wrong way. The government should not get increased power in order to secure our rights. The best way to preserve rights is minimal government involvement.

i cannot agree more. i think this country , even though they try to say they don't // base too many things on religion. just because the bible says that marriage is only between a man and a women, that is not everyones beliefe. i thought this was supposed to be a free coutry.? the gov. is slowly taking away human rights. i think if two men or two women want to get married, that is great and they should be allowed to do so. they should be happy just like a man and women. it is there choice, and they should be supported. i have friends that are les/gay... and if they want to get married, i am there to support them. i think the homophobics need to get over themselves. and mind there own business.

I agree with you. I'm not gay, but I think there are more important things to worry about in this world than gay marriage. People say marriage is against God, but marriage is just a legal contract. Otherwise you wouldn't need to have a judge or justice of the peace to perform it or end it. if it was between you and God you could be married by anyone and it would be recognized, but that's not how it works. I personally don't care who gets married to who.

Aren't some of the people who are shouting the loudest against gay marriage the ones who are secretly having gay relationships?
The fact that homophobia is so widespread makes me wonder about the t-r-u-e sexual feelings of some of these macho men. They're terribly afraid of gay relationships. Why?
Many of these same macho men - the less outwardly religious ones of course - are turned on by the idea of two females. Again, what is it about two men in a relationship that frightens them so much?
Shakespeare summed it up: "Methinks thou doest protest too much."
I live at the buckle of the Bible belt. We just had a statewide referendum to amend our state constitution to forbid same-sex marriage. I was truly hoping the young people would come out and vote and make it at least a contest, but my daughter said her friends are homophobes, too.
I was pretty depressed at the outcome - something like 85 percent in favor of this ban. I do not like living in a society that is so harsh in judgment of their brothers and sisters!

I don't think that you really wanted an answer. I think you just want to vent. And that's fine too. But I am way to conservative to give my opinion on this matter. However, I respect you for your outwardness and curiosity.

Why, because GOD created marriage to be between a MAN and a WOMAN, and sex was created by got to be between a HUSBAND and WIFE!!! God created Adam & Eve, not Adam & Steve!
And about someone being born homosexual, it's a lie, no one is born homosexual it is a CHOICE!!!!
I am glad that states in the US are adopting marriage ammendments defining marriage as between 1 man and 1 woman.
