In today's society, (e.g., Britney/Lindsay/Paris showing their private parts on purpose, morbidly obese people etc...), why do we have to spend so much money and dress in uncomfortable suits and choking ties? Buying these expensive clothes also damages the environment, makes poor people embarressed to go to parties if they don't have suits, exploits child labor in Bangladesh etc...

And dressing at weddings is even worse as you know the people will get divorced!

That's a sad outlook! And only a very few suits are "child labor" if any! Dressing "slick" started as a fad in the 1920's era also known as the zoot suit era. It displayed class and suitability. If you weren't sportin' a suit, you were a no body. As the Zoot Suit era died out, suits stayed popular with formal events such as dinner parties, weddings, funerals, etc. It remained a sign of class and respectability. So, if you don't want to be seen as a loser or poverty stricken individual, and want to show respect for a function you chose to attend, just rock the suit!

Conformity is king in the world of male fashion. If you want access to the halls of power or the boardroom, if you seek the approbation of those who can grant you capital, then you will invest in a well fitted suit and you'll learn how to use it to your advantage.

If you want to think for yourself and dress in a way that pleases you, prepare to pay a heavy price for such liberty. Prepare to live without access to capital, and to be ill thought of due to making a poor first impression on the patriarchy.

You're free to do as you choose, but you cannot choose the consequences. I sympathise with you, but one cannot ignore the world around you; play, or be played.

so what if some people dont want to look professional or clean cut, You should wear suits because its what you want to do and it makes you look nice , It help you get the job or get into a party or even get the attention of the one you've been eyeing. If you dress the part you can get the part. No one forces you to wear a suit but you should.

You're quite cynical lol. I guess formal is formal and we still do have standards as a society. I think most people feel good dressing up, anyway. Don't you feel hot all decked out in a nice suit?

I agree ties are kinda silly but what can ya do. You can question anything and it wouldn't get you far, unfortunately.
