hi, my daughter is in 6th grade and is very obsessed with weight. im rather skinny myself but she doubts her weight. she is about 5'2'' and 45 kg or 99 pounds and i was wondering if this is normal? also i would like to know the average weight because we live in a foreign country and almost all her friends are skinnier because where we live, most girls are skinny. shes also very self conscious about her curves. she had her period already but does not like her curves. do u know any ways to reduce curve size?

Many factors play into what is the "right" weight for someone. The supposed easy optimum height/weight ratio for women is 100 pounds at 5 feet with an additional five pounds per each inch over. So, for 5'2, it would be 110.

Still, she's 12. A lot is going to happen with her body in the next few years. She could get curvier, or she could hit a growth spurt and grow several inches while losing the baby fat. Genetics, nutrition, amount of exercise all play into it as well.

Your best bet is to look at family history. How were you built at that age. How about siblings, aunts, cousins? Also, consult with a doctor and see what they say. She might just be an early developer and those curves she's cursing now, she'll be proud of later.

By obsessing on all of this with your daughter you could drive her into an eating disorder. Perhaps she has developed younger than her friends. 99 pounds at 5'2" is far from fat. It may be a bit on the thin side but i don't know ratios based on age.

You would be better off getting your daughter to accept who she is than trying to figure out what size she should be. Being 12 and developing is tough. Accepting the curves are part of the tough growing up process. Help her to be proud of being female instead of ashamed of it.

Well according to the bmi index thingy - she is 19.24.. and they class under 18.5 to be underweight... I'd say she is a great weight for her height - a little on the skinny side maybe.. but if she begins to lose more or get more obsessed about it, then you should consider seeing a doctor about it seeing as she is still growing..

The average weight varies from country to country so i couldn't tell you, plus over here (the uk)the average weight tends to be higher than someone with a "perfect" weight so thats not a great way to look at it..

go on......... to see the bmi thing

Your daughter is under weight. Go to your doctor and have him check and see what her body mass index should be. At any age she shouldn't be that skinny. I also suggest taking her to see a therapist so she can talk about why she feels so bad. She needs more self confidence.
My daughter is 15 weighs 150 pounds and is 6'0 tall. You wouldn't believe how many times a day young men call her. She doesn't even date! Women have curves and she is turning into a woman.

I have been 5"2 since i was 12 and i weighed about the same around 100 in grade6-8 so its normal-- thats what i was told! she is fine just becareful in high school and college because that is when I gained about 10-15 lbs-- im 25 now and since I sit down for 8 hrs working im up to 125 :( make sure she eats healthy and does light exercise-- atleast she's curvy! and not a skeleton!! Make sure she eats - I was anorexic when i was around 11-12 yrs-- I was very curvy for my age...always comparing myself to models in magazines make sure she knows that she is healthy and make sure she does not skip meals !!

I think she is fine! People just have different sizes. It may be a cultural thing- you mentioned you are living in a foreign country. I am pretty skinny, straight up and down, while my baby sister (about your daughter's age, size) is adopted from Romania and is already curvy and thicker than me. If she is concerned, exercise with her- but don't tell her she needs to change. In my opinion, she is perfectly fine.

Your weight-in stones or whatever-needs to be based on more criteria than age. Age is one of the least criteria. How tall? body type? etc.

5'2 99lbs sounds normal to me, certainly not fat. dont let your daughter obsess over wght. If she wants to drop some do it through exercise and by making healthy dinners and watching her sugary/fatty foods intake with her.
