If you have to go with one go with the Clash. They're a great band to introduce you to punk. The Ramones are also a must. There's a lot of great stuff people have listed before me and I agree with some of them. Stiff Little Fingers, Wire (their first 3 albums), The Stooges,Television. What ever you do though, stay away from the 90's punk. It's best to start at the begining and go from there.

contrary to popular belief, the sex pistols aren't all that great. Sid Vicious didn't actually know how to play the bass.

good punk bands:
-the clash
-the stooges
-dead boys
-the damned
-the ramones
-richard hell and the voidoids
-the new york dolls
-television
-stiff little fingers
-the jam
-the heartbreakers
-blondie

these are just the bands from the 70's and early 80's....it seemed like everyone else has the more contemporary stuff covered....but this is considered to be the heart and soul of punk
