Guy,
It really depends on the music you would like to learn. One thing is for sure, start off with a guitar with easy action,( strings that are easy to hold down on the frets) believe me, this will help keep your interest in it. A good acoustic to start with is the nylon string classical. Even if your a metalhead, these are cool. There are alot of good low action electrics to choose from, Yamaha or Ibanez are good starters. As for Bass, there are so many guitar players out there, that you will always find a gig. And if your not too much into the "leader of the band" thing, this maybe your calling.
I mean, stop and think about it , the Bass player is "sonically" connected to every girls a** in the crowd!

I say get a classical guitar...the nylon strings are easier on the fingers and make sure that the action is not too high...action being the space from the strings to the fret board...if the action is easy then you will be more likely to want to practice more...if you really get the hang of it then later you can move onto an electric...good luck and happy playing!

First learn how to spell 'acoustic'.
Then -- the air guitar is the easiest to play.
If you don't want sore fingers, get a nylon string. A good used one is better than a new cheap one.
MOST IMPORTANT -- learn how to tune it, unless you just plan to play rock, then it doesn't matter much.
Don't use a capo -- unless you want the world to see that you only know three chords.
If you're a serious student, learn something besides rock; it's crude, rude and a joke -- musically. But then again, you'll never have to get a haircut.

Theres continuously common songs you may study collectively as at a beginner point, then build up gradually to greater sturdy songs. :). rock on x
