In the summer of 1942, a total of 8 German U-Boats were sunk off the eastern US coast, the Gulf of Mexico, and in the Caribbean.

An excellent read on the subject is Homer Hickam's book, "Torpedo Junction: U-Boat War Off America's East Coast 1942".

dozens of them!!!for more specific numbers see the time-life book on u-boats it shows areas of sinkings by silhouetted images on a map of the atlantic!!!all sides in the war lost astounding numbers of submarines and brave ,able crews!!!the american submarine force sank more enemy shipping than all the surface fleet and air forces of all sevices combined!!and were especially effective against military and merchant shipping of the imperial japanese forces!!dirigibles, escort carriers and warship launched aircraft from catapults proved increasingly effective as developed progressively more as the war played out;as well as scientific developments in sonar, sounding and radar equipment!!!!!
