Mel Gibson is small fry. Look how America let Bill Clinton off the hook.

Note: I have not seen 'Apocalypto,' so am speaking only on a basis of his previous movies. I am sure Mel Gibson is an intelligent person and not "an idiot." Nonetheless:

America is a reactionary nation. We were founded on revolutionary principles, and we like to still think of ourselves as revolutionaries. For better or worse, Mel Gibson also fancies himself a revolutionary, and certainly behaves like a reactionary. America pays attention to him for that reason.

Additionally, the box-office for Gibson has been high since the mid-eighties. That was magnified by the financial success of 'The Passion of the Christ' (helped by strong marketing to the fundamentalist/religious right community in the US, which championed it as a movie 'for them'). That ensured whatever Gibson's next movie was, it would have significant box office draw. It could have been 'Gigli' and it would have topped the box office.

The campaign for 'Apocalypto' has been huge - the last two movies I saw both had trailers for it. Gibson is an extremely wealthy man and can finance a lot of advertising that smaller, more personal movies can't merit. Additionally, the sheer fact that it is Mel Gibson, and that people expect chaos to result, makes it an 'event' and ensures steady box office.

Gibson's relationship to America, the movie's financing and Gibson's cinematic history, and a strong advertising campaign and buzz factor, mean that of course it opens at #1. That shouldn't be a surprise, really.

Mel Gibson made a movie about the decline of the Mayan civilization. The content and meaning of the movie have a unique historical value, independent of anything that is happening today and independent of Mel Gibson's political views. He is certainly NOT an idiot.
You are advocating censorship and revenge. That is a failed and childish strategy dating back to ancient times and against the principles that created this country.
Fortunately, Americans in general are independent thinkers and
can exercise judgement from a broader and more mature perspective than yours.
I can see that your language is filled with hate. We are not interested in pleasing you.

Mel Gibson is not hate-filled, he made a mistake. You've never said anything that you regretted? You've never had a negative thought in your life? Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.

The American people have a tendency to be pretty forgiving: Bill Clinton, Michael Newdow, Michael Moore, OJ Simpson, Mel Gibson, Michael Richards, and I could go on and on.

Would you rather we never forgive; if that's the case, no more aid of any kind to three-quarters of Europe and the Middle East.

Where did you say you were from?

Art should stand seperate from your likes or dislikes of someone's person opinions. Just because a man is a jerk or 'hate-filled' doesn't mean that what he creates is automatically a hate-filled or terrible thing. You should divide your likes or art from the person that makes it, at least to an extent. Even if Mel Gibson is a hate monger, his movie has nothing to do with his feelings towards Jews or anyone else. If it's a good movie, it's a good movie. America making his movie number one at the box office isn't rewarding him for his comments either. It's rewarding him, and maybe deservedly, for making a good movie.

So I'm just a little confused here....are you from America? "Bush is the enemy, anyone who supports him is a traitor to my country" Or whatever you have on your profile thingy....hey look man, I'm not a republican, but what you wrote doesn't really make me feel comfortable that you are from America either.....And on the movie note....which one are you talking about? Try to remember a few things, first of all, people will go watch any movie that has a commercial preview of it....also, its not a one man Mel Gibson show, there are probably a lot of other people involved in the movie....we made them number 1 too....

How is Mel Gibson hate filled?
He portrayed the truth about Jesus' death, something that really happened.

I suppose the people who make other historical films are hate filled too, oh, and the people who write the history books, and what about the people who teach history?

They're all hate filled, aren't they?

No.
Think again.
Yes, this is America; we are people who stand up for what we believe. We stand up for what is truly right.

Over 85% of Americans believe in a God that they cant SEE HEAR nor TOUCH.
THATS MORONIC and IDIOTIC so did you honestly expect them to suddenly have an increase in their IQ levels when it comes to Mel Gibson? Most people are complete fools, the evidence is all around us.

Mel Gibson didn't kill Jesus. The Jews did. Done deal. Killing people is bad. If you are on the other side of the fence, you'll never get it.
