And I was raised as a Jehovah's Witness !!

These are great questions. They are exactly the kinds of questions a good pastor or Bible study group will help you with. Thomas had doubts and walked the earth with Jesus. The Bible was assembled some 300 years after the death of Christ. The church at that time (and really since) considered any other writings to be heresy and destroyed what there was. You may assume the destroyed a lot of good stuff, but consider the quality of writing you see in the world today. Much is not very literate or informed. Some hold that the Bible is the inspired word of God and is literal in its meaning. Others that it is subject to some interpretation. I am trying to remember now, but there is a book called the Case for Christ - author Josh ? It's been awhile since I read it. It is very good reading - fun actually if you can believe it, and it will tell you a lot. Try it.

You're on the right track! Keep thinking, keep asking questions, and keep doubting. People who make claims need to be able to back them up with repeatable, observable evidence. There is some great discussion on http://forums.randi.org/forumindex.php
The bible is primarly a work of fiction entirely compiled by a large group of humans over hundreds of years. It's inconsitent and very poorly written and translated. Religion was government and power at one time and in many cases still largley is. It is nothing more than a group of people, full of greed, controlling others with lies and deception. Well, maybe it's a bit more than that but is certainly the root of many evils.
Everybody has doubts, even those that truly claim they believe. Some are just afraid to admit it.

You are quite right that the history of christianity as a faith is sordid. It is filled with murder, genocide attempts (often against the Jews) and all manner of evils perpetrated by the church. Worst, if you dared not to believe, they killed you - take the inquisition and the campaigns of Charlemagne. Heck, from what some christians write here, they would do it to you.
Play safe - make them prove what they claim. And if in doubt...well, you are probably right.

Perhaps this is more of a 'Religion & Spirituality' question; although, if you asked over there, you'd get little more than a lot of rhetoric and bible quotes thrown at you.
