They all moved up to Maine. I'm serious, they did. Back in the 70's and then when everything started to die out a lot of them (at least the New Englander's) moved up to Maine because it was so secluded. My parents live up there now, going on 3 years and from the 6 months I lived up there I saw a lot of Hippies, except with less teeth, a can or two of beer and their kids would sit at the end of the driveway and wave at cars for fun. I'm not kidding you. And this was only 1/3 of the way up in Maine, it wasn't even at the top of the state!
I didn't really think they were that great. They depict them to be so cool on TV, but when you meet them in real life, especially when they're older...it's very different. There's still the "being free" and smoking pot, but a lot more bitterness in their attitude as well.

They are still around. Find a good university town in a place that has lots of nature nearby, and you'll find the hippies. Some of them still drive Volkswagen vans. Lots of them are artists, or run small businesses like coffee shops, bed and breakfast inns, outdoor sports stores, and other funky businesses often located in once derelict buildings that they have restored.
Usually when you find a once-dead mining town that is now a thriving resort town, you find that hippies paved the way and rebuilt the town back in the 60s and 70s. Of course, they end up being victims of their own success; check out what happened to Telluride, Taos, Santa Fe, Moab, Flagstaff, etc. etc. But they are still there, and doing just fine.

I think hippies got tired of being different and just conformed. Sometimes you meet "old hippies," though, and they're pretty neat folks. I wish more hippie culture had survived.

Where do you live?
We're all over the places I live and visit--- both "old" ones and 'second generation' hippies.
Try the Big Island and Kauai (Hawaii) and N CA, Oregon, and WA. Taos and other beautiful places in N Mexico-- Austin TX-- any place where there is a good-sized university.

Heather said it right! Those who did not conform did not fare well in life. Those who are not "drugged out" (crazy) are either dead, or losers. I was around ten years too young, but I loved the culture. It I had been older, I'm afraid to say, I would probably be in Maine too!
