Okay, here goes, my mother is 60, disabled because of diabetes and heart problems. She does not have cable. Where we live it is impossible for her to afford it. Just for basic they want almost 50 dollars. So, for Christmas I bought her 6 movies that she loves. Last month we bought her a dvd player. I also got her a foot spa. She likes to do crafts, but I am unsure what to get. She already crotches. She can't afford the paints she used to do. Neither can we, to get all the stuff to start is almost 300 dollars. Plus, she lives in apartment building and oil paints are "smelly". Anyway, I would really like to get her something she could do to occupy her time. We talk on the phone 2 or 3 times a day, and she only lives a quarter mile from my house. So, I do get her out and stuff. But, I would love for her to have something to do that she would enjoy. Does anyone have any ideas? Please!

We are in a small rural area and she does not have a car. That is part of the reason she lives so close to me, so that I can take her. I already am with her 3 or 4 days a week on average. I am married and have a child, whom I homeschool. The only way she will usually go places is if myself or her sister take her. Her sister (my aunt) lives an hour away. Sorry, didn't have enough room earlier to add some of these things.

Get her some used movies or the cheapo ones at Walmart. Some of the TV shows are only $1 each.

Rug-hooking materials are cheap and very time intensive. You need the netting, a hook, and different yarns that she can cut herself. Ask the craftstore to show you how to cut the yarn.

Jigsaw puzzles are good and so are crossword puzzles. The public library can't be beat either, cheap and reading is fun for most people.

Chess is good and radio shack has all kinds of chess machines as well as others that aren't too expensive. Then when you visit you good bring a real board and play.

Is there an art gallery or museum nearby that you could plan a day trip to? Is there a senior citizens organization that could help with her paint supplies and canvasses? Some of these groups have regular meetings, outings, etc...

Perhaps she could learn how to play Mah Jong, or bridge or dominoes and invite a few neighbors over for coffee and games. It would be nice if she could get to know a few of the people in her building and they could spend some time together... Time is the most precious gift we can give to someone....

Well, how about a gift certificate to Wal-Mart, or Target so that she can pick out whatever she wants for herself? Or you could give her a gift certificate to Hollywood Video or Blockbuster since she has a DVD player. Or you could get her a boombox if she enjoys listening to music and doesn't have a radio. Since she's artistic, you could get her a set of watercolors (very inexpensive) and a sketch pad. Or you could get her a gift certificate to The Dollar Store. Hope this helps some. Happy Holidays.

How about giving your Mom a trip to a museum or art gallery, and a gift card to one of her favorite stores. Getting your Mom involved in a Seniors club would help her associate with and make new friends her own age. God Bless and Merry Christmas.

Are there any ladies groups she can join? Something like a bingo hall or ladies auxiliary? This way she can get out, meet a few people, that could lead to friendships for tea etc? For crafts there is always needlepoint.knitting, hook rugs...cross stitch...things like that.

a gift will never tell how you feel, just get all the family together that cost more than any money or paint
