Thought by some to have arisen thusly : hiSPanIC.

Thank heaven you never heard it.I hope one day America will have no derogatory terms for any racial,ethnic or sexual group,but I am dreaming.All of us, of whatever background were smeared with nasty epithets until we became "Americans",even though Puerto Ricans have been American citizens since 1917.They have spilt their blood in all of America's wars with great pride and courage. As Puerto Ricans gained political power and population in the New York area you rarely hear the word.My memory tells me,that the word came from the "no speak (sp///ic) English.

Sp ic is a racist/derogatory term for Hispanic. It is used often on the east coast.
